What They Don't Have is the Things You Take For Granted

Sep 10th, 2011 Anthony Corrano

Look around you. What kinds of things are you surrounded by? You are probably sitting at a desk with a computer, perhaps in the comfort of your own home. There, you will find couches and pillows, maybe a kitchen with a refrigerator. In another room, you may find a bed, and a closet full of things to wear. Walking outside, you'll find your car parked in the driveway next to a cleanly cut yard full of grass and trees. Across the street, you may find your neighbor pulling weeds. You wave to him, and he waves back, the friendship and safety of your neighborhood confirmed once again in the simple action.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have none of it? People all over the United States live every day of their lives without any of these comforts that we seem to take for granted. And they need our help.

Statistics have shown that about 1 in every 50 children are homeless, with half of them actually being below the age of 8. These children are in the unfortunate situation of not knowing what it would be like to receive an education, eat more than one meal a day, and have extra sets of clothing in the closet, or even to have somewhere soft and warm to sleep every night. These are things that they simply don't have. And the only way to solve that is to help them to find them. You, with every simple donation can make a huge difference in the lives of children like these.

If we do not help them, who will? If everyone could give just a little there would be enough for all who are in need. Many religions and charity organizations teach of the wisdom and integrity that are found in individuals who give service. It is a characteristic that ties communities and families together, and enables individuals to build trust and respect. By giving of ourselves, we can make a difference in the life of someone else, who may then do the same for us later on down the road.

There are many ways to give. Even by donating a simple box full of canned food can do much to help the situation. You can also give old clothing that you don't use anymore, or give a donation of money to an organization that will use it for good. Other people have donated cars, which has been a huge help to those people in need. There are millions of ways for you to give them what they don't have. Through the gift of your time, money, and heart, American children and families will be given opportunities they've never dreamed of. Be a part of something important. Start today.
